What does an Esquires Coffee franchise cost?
Esquires’ dedicated UK costs page publishes a typical total investment of £270,000–£300,000 and a minimum capital investment of £100,000. It lists the initial franchise fee at £19,500. These are different measures: the minimum capital is a funding requirement, while the total describes the wider opening project. Do not add all three figures together.
There is a discrepancy worth resolving before budgeting. The application form shows a broader £250,000–£300,000 investment range. We retain both figures with their source rather than choosing the lower starting point. Ask which estimate applies to your store format and what the current proposal includes.
Which costs need a written breakdown?
The costs page says the total includes the franchise fee and start-up items such as equipment, fit-out, furniture and hiring support. That does not make it a quotation for every property. Request a schedule distinguishing the fee, premises work, equipment, professional costs and the operating reserve.
For each category, record whether VAT is included, when payment is due, who receives the money and whether a supplier quote is still provisional. Have the funding plan reconciled with that schedule. A difference between the website’s two ranges cannot be resolved simply by assuming a cheaper property will fit.
Royalty and marketing charges
The official costs page lists a 6% royalty and a 2% marketing fee. Its wording refers to net sales; the FAQ describes gross sales net of VAT and weekly collection. Obtain the agreement’s exact sales definition and calculation rules. The rates alone do not describe every cash payment the store will make.
For a flat-rate scenario, our franchise fee worksheet shows how percentage charges and fixed charges combine. The tool’s default fixed charge is illustrative, not an additional Esquires fee. Keep weekly payment timing separate from a monthly planning model.
Experience, training and owner involvement
Esquires’ FAQ says prior coffee-industry experience is not mandatory and describes single-store ownership as typically hands-on. This is relevant when deciding how much time you can commit and whether your plan assumes employing a manager to do work the owner would otherwise perform.
Ask for the current training schedule, the required attendance and the staffing expected at opening. Establish how property search, design, fit-out and training are coordinated. Support descriptions should become specific deliverables and responsibilities in your project plan.
Application and location due diligence
The published application sequence starts with registering interest and a discussion, followed by an NDA before confidential projections and a fuller application. Registering interest does not establish approval, funding or a right to a particular site. Review those decisions separately.
Before signing a lease or placing a major order, clarify the location approval process, any conditions on the project and the consequences of delay. Test the proposed rent, staffing and demand assumptions against the actual location. A national brand description is not evidence of a store’s future sales.
How to use this guide in a shortlist
Compare the Esquires project with the same type of coffee business. A financed van contribution or a coffee machine installed in an existing venue is not an equivalent shop-opening budget. Start with the UK coffee franchise overview and the business-model comparison before ranking prices.
Use the checklist below to track your evidence. This guide does not reproduce promotional earnings projections as an owner-income forecast. Request the supporting information, assumptions and limitations for any performance claim, then review the proposed transaction independently.

Frequently asked questions
Is £100,000 the complete cost of opening an Esquires shop?
No. It is the published minimum capital investment. The costs page gives a typical total investment of £270,000–£300,000.
Why do two investment ranges appear?
The dedicated costs page states £270,000–£300,000, while the application page shows £250,000–£300,000. Request the current estimate for your proposed location.
Is the £19,500 fee additional to the published total?
The costs page says its total includes the franchise fee. Confirm the inclusions in your written proposal and avoid double-counting it.
Do I need previous coffee experience?
Esquires’ FAQ says it is not mandatory and describes training. Eligibility, owner involvement and approval still require individual confirmation.
