Editorial diagram for Franchise vs independent business: how to compare
Editorial diagram. Any amounts shown are illustrative examples, not reported brand results or earnings forecasts.

Start with the decisions you want to control

Choosing between a franchise and an independent business is partly a question of operating freedom. List the decisions that matter to you: products, pricing, suppliers, opening hours, store appearance, marketing and future expansion. Then find out which decisions a proposed franchise agreement reserves to the brand.

An independent owner must develop and maintain their own systems. A franchise applicant must investigate the systems offered and the obligations attached to using them. Neither route removes the need to understand customers, manage people and fund the business through difficult periods.

Compare the complete opening project

Prepare two budgets for the same location, format and capacity. Include equipment, fit-out, deposits, professional fees, inventory, launch spending and working capital. Put franchise-specific fees in one budget and the cost of creating an independent concept in the other.

Check what is actually included in each supplier quote. A package price that excludes premises and working capital cannot be compared directly with a complete project estimate. Record assumptions beside the totals and keep a list of costs that are still unquoted. Use our opening budget worksheet for the common categories.

Put support into operational terms

Ask what training, opening assistance and ongoing support will be delivered, by whom and for how long. Describe the practical output you need rather than accepting a broad support label. For example, a staffing plan, approved equipment specification and launch timetable are different deliverables.

For an independent business, decide how you would obtain those capabilities and what they would cost. You may need external design, operating advice or additional management experience. For a franchise, compare the promised support with the binding documents and speak to operators who have recently opened in a comparable format.

Test the ongoing economics and workload

Create monthly scenarios using the same sales assumption and clearly separated cost categories. Add recurring franchise charges only where they apply. Allow for the work involved in building your own marketing, purchasing and procedures in the independent case. Your own time should not silently count as free.

Then consider the role you want. An owner-operated shop, a selected restaurant operator arrangement and a multi-unit investment are different commitments. Confirm the expected personal involvement before using them as alternatives in a comparison. A familiar brand name does not establish that the proposed role suits your plans.

Consider future changes before the first opening

Investigate the route to selling, renewing, relocating or closing the business. A franchise agreement and a property lease may impose separate commitments. An independent business also has leases, employment responsibilities, supplier contracts and brand-building work that may affect an exit.

Use the checklist below to organise evidence for both options. It deliberately does not produce a score declaring one option better. Decide which unresolved issues would change your choice, obtain the missing information and review the transaction with advisers familiar with the local market.

This guide makes no such claim. Compare the actual obligations, costs, operating evidence and your ability to execute each option.

Should I include my own time?

Yes. Record the required owner workload and how personal living costs and remuneration are funded.

Does this checklist choose a winner?

No. It records research progress and leaves the decision to a review of your actual evidence.
